How does Algae Aid Algaecide work;

Quaternary Ammonium Compound (QAC), the active ingredient in Algae Aid Algaecide works primarily by membrane disruption. QAC does this due to its strong positive charge. Algae, mould and bacteria possess a negative charge. QAC binds and attaches to the algae, mould or bacteria and causes the cytoplasmic membrane to leak, creating so much damage to the cells that eventually the algae, mould or bacteria die.

How to use Algae Aid to remove and control mould for general use, walls, floors and pathways;

  • Clean the surface with an appropriate cleaner.
  • Apply the solution of Algae Aid to the cleaned surface and allow it to dry.
    • General Use – 6mL per 1L (Do not rinse treated surfaces)
    • Walls & Floors (tiles, concrete & fibro) & pathways – 10mL – 20mL per 1L Water depending level of soiling (Use after a pre-cleaning treatment)
  • This will stop spore growth and maintain a clean, presentable surface.
  • A sealer may be applicable in sealing the clean surface.

How to control algae in turf management;

Algae are primitive green plants. They can be a problem in turfgrass when surface conditions are overly wet. They tend to occur in low, shaded, or compacted areas. Algae form a greenish to black scum on the soil or in thin turf. As this blackish scum dries, it appears as a crust that later cracks. Turfgrass plants may become chlorotic (yellowed), weak, and eventually die as a result of Algae competition.

Culturally, algal scums can be managed in turf by employing the following methods:

  • Improving surface and subsurface drainage
  • Avoiding frequent irrigation, especially at night
  • Aerification of compacted areas
  • Maintaining proper pH and nutritional levels
  • Increasing mowing height where possible and practical
  • Improving light penetration to the turf sward
  • Using more shade-tolerant grasses where shade is the major cause of the problem.

Algae in greenhouse & nurseries production;

Algae are found in nearly every greenhouse, nursery, and sometimes even landscape where ornamentals are produced.  Algae grow wherever we have supplied it with excess water and food. It can be found on pots, potting media surfaces, soil, benches, walkways and even all over plant leaves and stems.  Algae are a nuisance, a worker health risk (slipping), a challenge to plant nutrition as they use water and fertiliser meant for plant growth, and an irrigation challenge because a dense algal mat can make water penetration impossible.  They are also food for some insect pests, including fungus gnats.

    Can I mix Algaefix Algaecide with Mancozeb Fungicide?

  1. Q Can I mix Algaefix Algaecide with Mancozeb Fungicide?
    Asked by Wayne Bratby on July 25, 2022 12:14 pm
    Answered by the admin

    Algaefix Algaecide doesn't list compatible products on the product label, so any tank mixes with Algaefix would be an off-label recommendation.  We recommend speaking with the Algaefix manufacturer (Adama) on 1800 423 262 or email [email protected] as they may be able to suggest suitable tank mixes.

Tips For Use

General Instructions:

For general algae and mould control:

  • Clean the surface with an appropriate cleaner.
  • Apply the solution of Algae Aid Algaecide to the cleaned surface and allow it to dry.
  • This will stop spore growth and maintain a clean, presentable surface.
  • A sealer may be applicable in sealing the clean surface.

For swimming pools, spa and therapeutic pools:

  • Algae Aid Algaecide must be used with a registered sanitiser when the pool is used for bathing.
  • To prevent the water from appearing hazy, the product should not be added for at least 48 hours after super chlorinating the pool. However, during normal dosing, this time delay is not required.
  • Use the product monthly, or if under a high bathing load, use it weekly.
  • For spa baths, use in conjunction with a cleaning product. (Calculate the volume of a pool by multiplying the length x width x depth of the pool in metres x 1000 to give the volume in
    litres).

Winter maintenance (Swimming pools, spa and therapeutic pools):

  • If the pool is sanitised using chlorine, treat the pool every 3-4 weeks.
  • After applying the product, filter water for 12 hours to ensure mixing, brush pool walls thoroughly, and vacuum.
  • Only use high dosage rates when the pool is not in use, e.g. heavy algae and winter dose rates.
  • For General algae and mould control: Clean the surface with an appropriate cleaner such as Cyndan “Cleans All” or Cyndan “Concrete Wash” (see your Indigo Representative).
  • Apply the solution of Algae Aid Algaecide to the cleaned surface and allow it to dry.
  • This will stop spore growth and maintain a clean, presentable surface.
